The game is set in Gotham City after the deaths of Bruce Wayne / Batman (Michael Antonakos) and Police Commissioner James Gordon, which has resulted in a rise of crime and police corruption. In this mode, players battle enemies across 30 levels in an arena-like environment while completing various objectives. A separate four-player cooperative mode named "Heroic Assault" was introduced in November 2022. While the narrative campaign can be played solo, the game also features a two-player cooperative multiplayer mode, wherein the second player can drop in and out at any time without affecting the other one.
During the daytime, players will occupy the Belfry, which acts as the team's base of operations and allows players to switch characters and prepare for the next mission by managing progression, and upon leaving the Belfry, the game will fast forward to the nighttime. They can also use vehicles such as the Batcycle to explore the city. Players can level up their characters, but enemies will be automatically leveled up as well. Each character has their own unique playstyle and abilities, such as Robin being able to teleport via the Justice League's satellite. The game features four playable characters: Nightwing, Batgirl, Robin, and Red Hood. Gotham Knights is an action role-playing game set in an open world Gotham City. The game received mixed reviews from critics, which was considered inferior to the Batman: Arkham games, with criticism for its general gameplay and world design, technical issues, combat and storyline, although its co-op mode, emotional depth and the characterization of the lead characters received praise. Versions for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One were also planned, but were ultimately cancelled.

Gotham Knights was released on October 21, 2022, for PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S. A cooperative online multiplayer mode is also included, allowing two players to play through the single-player campaign together while progressing in their own game.
Outside of the story, players are able to complete side missions to unlock additional content and collectible items. Players can freely move around Gotham City, interacting with characters, undertaking missions, and gaining experience points and other resources to level up their characters and equipment. Gameplay is presented from the third-person perspective with a primary focus on using each playable character's traversal and combat abilities to defeat enemies and explore the environment. While investigating the events that led to their mentor's demise, the heroes become embroiled in an ancient conflict between two secret organizations fighting for control of Gotham: the Court of Owls and the League of Shadows.
Inspired by the Batman: Gotham Knights comic series and based on the DC Comics character Batman and his supporting cast, the game focuses on the characters Nightwing, Batgirl, Robin, and Red Hood as they attempt to restore justice to Gotham City during a period of decline in the immediate aftermath of Batman's death.
